Did Prince Charles fall asleep during Prime Minister Helen Clark's speech at the dedication of the New Zealand memorial in London at the weekend?

The Queen appeared to suspect her eldest son had nodded off and gave him a stern stare during the Armistice Day ceremony in Hyde Park, the News of the World newspaper reported yesterday.

Seconds later the prince -- wearing the uniform of the New Zealand Air Force, of which he is Air Commodore in Chief -- roused himself and studied his programme.

"I was surprised when I saw the prince, he looked asleep during New Zealand premier Helen Clark's speech," press photographer Simon Jones was quoted by the News of the World as saying.

"You wouldn't expect it at an event like this."

The Sunday Times also reported on its website, Times Online that Prince Charles got a grim look from his mother after apparently falling asleep.

According to observers the prince's eyes closed and his head slumped onto his chest before he roused himself to look at his programme.

However, a spokeswoman for Clarence House denied Prince Charles fell asleep although one source admitted he might have had "a quiet moment of contemplation", the Sunday Times reported.
